The three pillars of UnitedCities
Bio-belonging, a global democratic government and free energy: the three pillars that organize UnitedCities' new society, and why they don't work apart.
UnitedCities is a fiction with propositive intent. It is a formulation of what a civilization would look like once it no longer believes itself separate from nature.
UC's world rests on three pillars that organize its entire new society.
Bio-belonging
It is the idea that we belong to nature. It is simple and it is powerful. If it belongs to us, how do we destroy it? How do we overexploit it?
We take care of everything we feel we belong to. To be able to destroy something, a distance is needed first, a non-belonging, that justifies that act.
How do you tear down a distance that should never have existed?
That's why tearing down that distance, extending belonging to everything that is nature, is a fundamental step in humanity's reconstruction after the Great Flood.
A democratic government for all of humanity
UC proposes that part of today's problem is the multiplicity of institutions and governments that each weigh in, on their own, on the common good. If that gets optimized and simplified into a system that combines direct and indirect democracy, with real-time interaction between representatives and cities, big changes can happen.
The holographic spheres above the ambassadors' heads represent the will of the peoples over their representatives, in real time, almost like a live rating. There is less disconnection and more effectiveness.
Free energy
Tesla said it was only a matter of time before humanity could harness energy directly from the space around us: the atmosphere. In UC, that becomes real through the Transconverters.
The economy of scarcity, the middlemen and the politics over access to energy come to an end.
Free energy, available 24 hours a day, anywhere and at any time. That's the other big change coming.
One movement, three directions
These three pillars don't work apart. Bio-belonging strips meaning from the idea of a foreign resource to exploit. The global democratic government gives that outlook a place to make decisions together. And free energy expands the potential for impact, raising responsibility over humanity's footprint and doing away with the ideas of scarcity that have historically excused inaction.
UnitedCities imagines what happens when those three changes occur together. It is not a conflict-free utopia: there are still interests that prefer the old order, and that tension is the engine of the story. But the starting point is different. The society UC proposes no longer starts from a separation between man and nature. It starts from the fact that such a separation never existed.
