The physics of white energy

We live inside a battery the size of the world, and lightning keeps recharging it. Which part of white energy is proven science, and which part we added ourselves.

The blueprints that surface in UnitedCities do not contain a machine. They contain an idea, written in almost a single line: the air around us holds energy, and it can be used. The whole civilization of UC hangs from that sentence, and the sentence is not ours. Tesla wrote it, and the physics behind it is not invented: it has been measured for over a century.

The sky is charged

About eighty kilometers above our heads there is a layer of air charged with electricity. The ground is charged too, but the other way around. And between them, ordinary air, which does not let current through. It is exactly what happens inside a battery: two poles and something in the middle keeping them apart.

The difference between those poles is enormous: hundreds of thousands of volts. And it never runs out, because it recharges itself. Right now some fifty lightning bolts per second are striking the planet, and every one of them charges the system back up. We live inside a battery the size of the world.

If we have a giant battery over our heads, why is there no socket?

The problem is not the energy, it is how you ask for it

Because for energy to be useful it is not enough that it exists: it needs a path to travel. Dry air does not let current through, and with no path nothing moves. It is a full dam with no outlet channel: all that water, and it does not light a single bulb.

Tesla spent his life looking for that channel. In 1899, in Colorado, he tried something nobody had thought of: instead of running wires, use the whole Earth as part of the circuit. He lit lamps at a distance with no wire in between. The experiment worked, and it is documented.

The secret is in the rhythm

To see why that can work with very little force, think of a swing. Shoving it takes real effort. Pushing it with one finger, exactly as it comes back, sends it higher and higher. The key was never the force: it was the timing.

The planet has its own rhythm too. The space between the ground and that upper layer vibrates at a very low, very steady frequency, something like an electrical heartbeat of the Earth. It could only be measured sixty years later, but Tesla had already sensed it, and tuned his devices to go along with it instead of fighting it.

What the fiction adds

For that to work, a Transconverter has to do three things. They are, precisely, the three nobody has managed yet:

Science up to here, us from here on

It is worth being clear about the limit. Everything above is real and can be checked: the charged sky and ground, the lightning that recharges the system, the planet's heartbeat, the lamps Tesla lit without wires in 1899. What does not exist is the part that turns all of that into the power of a home. That part is the only leap UnitedCities takes, and it takes it once: it is in the blueprints.

Science says where the energy is. Fiction dares to say how you take it.

That is why white energy does not work as magic, but as engineering missing one part. And that missing part is, in the end, what UnitedCities is about: we did not imagine a new source, we imagined what kind of society appears when energy stops having an owner.
